High-Performance Sand & Aggregate Raw Materials and Their Geological Characteristics
(I) Mechanical Index Requirements for High-Performance Sand & Aggregate

The main reference standards for current sand and aggregate production include: GB/T 14684-2001 Sand for Construction, GB/T 14685-2001 Pebble and Crushed Stone for Construction, TB/T 2140-90 Railway Ballast, TB/T 2328.18 Test Methods for Railway Ballast, the "Premium Ballast" requirements for high-speed railway research projects, and the European standard BS EN 13450:2002 Aggregates for Railway Ballast.

High-performance sand and aggregate are mainly used in expressway and high-grade highway construction projects. The aggregate indicators for high-speed railways are formulated based on the characteristics of high-speed trains: lighter axle load, increased impact and vibration frequency, and large dynamic loads. The key performance of aggregates focuses on impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and crushing resistance. Their functions and requirements cover three core aspects:

high performance aggregate

1. Bearing and transmitting the pressure from sleepers;

2. Ensuring the lateral, vertical, and longitudinal stability of the track, providing a flat and straight running track;

3. Acting as an elastic cushion for the track, cushioning and absorbing the impact and vibration from train wheels.

Physical Properties of High-Speed Railway Aggregates: Excellent abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and crushing resistance, with no breakage or pulverization under repeated impact and vibration.

Excellent Atmospheric Corrosion and Weathering Resistance (Chemical Properties): No cracking or disintegration under environmental conditions such as temperature changes, dry-wet cycles, freeze-thaw cycles, salt-alkali erosion, and acid rain. The ballast powder has good water permeability, meaning no water stagnation, no caking, and no hardening.

(II) Raw Material Index Requirements for High-Performance Sand & Aggregate

There are various types of sand and aggregate raw materials, mainly derived from rocks and pebbles, which are widely distributed in mountainous areas, alluvial plains at the foot of mountains, and river channels.

The minerals that make up rocks are called rock-forming minerals, which are compounds or elements with specific chemical compositions and structural characteristics. Some rocks are composed of a single mineral, while most are formed by multiple minerals. The main rock-forming minerals include: quartz, feldspar, mica, hornblende, calcite, dolomite, pyrite, etc.
